George Lucas' career has revolved under the idea of discovering the great potential of some stories and disappointing the audience with whatever "film" he cooks up with it.

I am a Star Wars fan. I love the idea of the Jedi, embodiments of the perfect civilized society in neglect of their own human emotions. The lightsaber is the single greatest fictional weapon of all time. Anakin's betrayal shocked the world even after we knew it was coming. But aside from those... Star Wars was real bullshit.
After watching The Dark Knight (twice) , it only placed the failures of Lucas in clearer writing. The Joker, just like Sidious, twisted in their own rights, sought to crumble society by attacking its one beacon of hope. Harvey Dent, just as Anakin was the chosen one, turned his back to the order of things to finally release all those repressed emotions. The Politics of Gotham and the Senatorial body of the Republic, oozing with corruption. The Death of Amidala and the death of Rachel both became turning points in the story.
In many ways... they are almost mirror images of each other...
which is why real Star Wars fans hate Star Wars (and George Lucas)
The prequels to the original trilogy came by so swiftly. It was supposed to ride on the whole "who is anakin?" thing. It's newer and more visually stunning than the original trilogy. Star Wars fans know this, and so they hate it even more. Jar Jar Binks, Midichlorians, the shitty dialogue ("you're breaking my heart"), technology that is blatantly more sophisticated than the “later” original trilogy…I despise all of it. There’s nothing a Star Wars fan hates more than a Star Wars prequel. They contradicted countless lines in the original trilogy
(Obi-Wan: “He was our only hope.”
Yoda: “No…there is another.”
Obi-Wan (not in script): “Oh, right, I f*cking held both of these kids as they were born in Episode 3. Sorry Yoda, I just plumb forgot!”)

The reason why one will go down in history as the pinnacle of superhero movies, while the other one will be remembered as a waste of a perfectly good storyline...
The reason is George Lucas.
