The final came with the backdrop of the hosts and my favorite team, Germany, being knocked out by Italy in the last round in the most cruel of fashions. I dare not describe the event to you, and Youtube will suffice. So this was it. Italy and France in the finals of the World Cup. It would be France's Zidane's last stand, the best player of this generation. The German fans, off the sickening feeling of Italy's triumph will be in full force, booing and throwing the proverbial bottles to the Italians. Italy were slight underdogs.
I would watch the match in Bellevue with JV and Alf. JV, never having watched football before, painted his face in the colors of the French flag. His drinks would be decorated with white stains throughout the morning. And yes, it was in the morning at 3am. I barely had enough sleep, yet there we were, a couple of slogs watching football, with "sleeping at the back of the class" awaiting us throughout the day.

- 6-0...... argentina!!!!
- seeing Fernando Torres stride down the pitch with that immaculate face

- Klose scoring in the 80th minute against Argentina

- Fabio Cannavaro

- Germany's run to the semis
- Sebastian Schweinsteigger's two goals
- Van Nistelrooy.... scoring his first ever world cup goal
- AND CANNAVARO LIFTING THE WORLD"S BIGGEST PRIZE IN THE GRANDEST STAGE OF THEM ALL
Yes, Cannavaro did it. He and Italy did it. In some respects, I never rooted for Italy. Their style is bland, boring and defensive. They would rather bore the fans to death than be scored on, as if a goal conceded was equivalent to their mistresses getting pregnant. But the fuckers won. And when that final whistle blew and the camera panned to Pirlo, Totti, Del Piero, Buffon and Cannavaro celebrating, I couldn't help but feel a sense of joy. They may not have been Zidane, but they were superstars. And now the whole world knows it.
I'm still pissed Germany got knocked out though.
