About a Boy

I tried reading About a Boy, Nick Hornby’s follow-up to High Fidelity. He was obviously riding the high of his previous success, because to be honest, I found this one a bit lacking. While Hornby was at his descriptive best, the protagonist just lacked the depth of Rob Gordon.

In the book, the main character, Will Freeman, fills out those Cosmopolitan magazine surveys that measure how cool you are. Apparently, sleeping with a stranger, dropping a shitload of cash on a single piece of clothing, and doing drugs (specifically in a club, not just as a safe experiment at home with friends) each net you five points on the cool scale.

The book isn't even good. I just wasted a solid four hours of my life trying to find a single reason why I bought the damn thing in the first place.
